British Gas customers are unlikely to enjoy a cut in their fuel bills despite the company seeing its profits rise by 80%. Experts said the falling wholesale cost of energy and rising profits meant companies should be making further price cuts but warned this was unlikely to happen as firms take the chance to invest in renewable energy and boost their supplies.
Robert Hammond, energy expert for Consumer Focus, said, “Millions of consumers paying high energy prices will be disappointed, but sadly unsurprised, that energy firms are making such large profits. Wholesale energy prices have come down and remain low, so we believe that energy firms across the board should be making significant further price cuts.”
A fall in wholesale costs and a cold snap that encouraged customers to use more energy to heat their homes helped to boost British Gas’ profits. It made a profit of £299 million for the six months to June 30, up from £166 million during the same period a year ago. British Gas increased prices by 46% last year.
